Lisdoonvarna’s 3rd Festive Weekend

The Third weekend of Europe’s largest matchmaking festival was full of love, romance and entertainment. Each weekend this single’s event focuses on some activities like traditional Irish dance and music, horse racing, speed dating and finishes with the “Mr. Lisdoonvarna and Queen of the Burren competition” to find the most eligible lady and gentleman of the year. The third weekend of the festival was no exception. In spite of heavy rain during the weekend the scheduled programs started on time and amazed the people. The couples appreciated and enjoyed the events and they had a great time over there. Matchmaking is an old tradition of the Irish and the small spa town of Lisdoonvarna fills itself up with love and romance during this festive season. Over the last three weekends Europe attracted thousands of love seekers from across the globe.

A film crew visited the festival in the last weekend. The interview program with the gang at the festival including Willie O’Sullivan will be broadcasted on sky channel 201 at 9pm on Thursday 22nd September, 2011. It’s a popular television show named “Out & About in Ireland”. You can see our facebook page www.facebook.com/Lisdoonvarna for competition details and for free tickets to the QClub. Lisdoonvarna Matchmaking Festival 2011, First weekend celebration

Lisdoonvarna Matchmaking Festival is really a unique and fantastic concept and the event is currently considered to be the world’s biggest singles event. The festival draws around 20,000 love-seeking pilgrims to its swarming taverns and bars. The first weekend of the festival (2nd -5th Sept) was really awesome, full of fun as well as full of love and romance for everyone out there. That weekend the scheduled events consisted of music, dance, and horse racing events. People started having fun at around 12 noon and the dance and craic excitement continued till late night. For those of you who are new to the term Craic, it is an Irish term which means entertainment, fun and joyous conversation. This matchmaking festival is organized by Willie Daly who is a famous horse trader as well as a third generation match maker.
In spite of heavy rain during the first weekend of the festival, it still managed to charm and attract a huge crowd across the globe. The traditional Irish music and dance events made the atmosphere more lively and romantic for the couples. The horse racing event was held during this weekend and it is a special highlight of the Lisdoonvarna festival and visitors usually take back with them some fond memories. Both first time and repeat visitors enjoyed the way the creative decoration of bars and taverns reflect the rich Irish culture.

Lisdoonvarna Matchmaking Festival 2011, Second weekend celebration

The famous Lisdoonvarna Matchmaking Festival which is considered to be Europe’s largest singles event is celebrated every year during the month of September with a lot of dancing and craic. If you are single and looking for your romantic partner, then this festival is the greatest opportunity for you to find your soul mate as well as have great fun. This year the 2nd week of the festival (9th – 16th Sept) had a high octane pitch to it and people across the world joined and enjoyed the event immensely.  What made the 2nd week memorable for a lot of people present there was the chance to meet Sinead O’Connor, a great singer of our generation. During her show, she announced that she was also looking for her love and that made the crowd all the more excited. She said that on an earlier occasion she had tried internet dating but later on gave up and decided to visit Lisdoonvarna instead. She came with her minder “Anton” who is really a pretty cool guy along with her two male nannies from the UK. Her presence and the vivaciousness she showed during the event was hugely appreciated by the crowd.

Celtic Challenge – Alzheimers Fundraiser

Whilst looking through the Lisdoonvarna Matchmaking Festival archives I came across the documents and press coverage relating to the fundraiser we were involved in for Alzheimers in 1999.

We were hoping to sail around the coast of Ireland in 18 hours.  The record at the time was 21 hours and 58 minutes (David Courtney from Limerick).   The distance around the Irish Coast is 710 nautical miles.

The crew was made up of experienced mariners:

Andrew Fenton – RNLI Helmsman in Bundoran, fully qualified in offshore navigation, also RYA day skipper and flying instructor (Class 1)

Marcus White, Lisdoonvarna – Full advance PADI Diver

Conor McGrath, Doolin – Full member of Doolin IMES, qualified with VHF / 3PS radio navigation systems.  Advanced first aid and boat handling courses under IMES training.

Derek Doyle – Full advanced diver, yacht owner and licenced amateur / ham operator

Lisdoonvarna “sleepy Irish village”

In December 2001 Glamour magazine wrote a 4 page article about the Lisdoonvarna Matchmaking Festival and all that it entails.  The article included interviews with visitors to the festival and quotes from Willy Daly the Matchmaker and his daughter Marie Daly, who has followed in her father’s footsteps.  Marie is quoted as saying;

“Despite modern technology, it isn’t any easier these days for young people to meet up”

There is a mention of the Barbeque Championships which were held at the Burren Castle Hotel that year.

The article finishes off with a mention of the local nightclub the Q Club.
